Somateria mollissima
Eider - The only resident marine duck in Britain. It is also the heaviest! The male is unmistakable with its black and white plumage and thick set beak and flat head. This is a true sea duck which dives for food such as shellfish. Mussels are the favourite. This is also a very fast flying duck reaching speeds of up to 70mph!
