Dendrocopos minor

Lesser Spotted Woodpecker - the smallest and least common of the three woodpeckers that are resident in Britain. Hardly bigger than a sparrow. This one was photographed in Vilamoura Portugal in November. Its insect food is similar to that of the great spotted woodpecker. Almost all the food taken is insects, usually found on the surface of tree trunks, branches and leaves. It rarely feeds on the ground. Not the best photograph but the only one I have, so here it stays until the next time!
