Phoenicurus ochruros

Black Redstart - This bird originally inhabited stony ground in mountains, particularly cliffs. I photographed these birds in the Algarve in Portugal. The male has a prominent white panel in the wing helping for identification. The female is a dull grey brown bird with the red tail quite obvious in flight. The diet consists of invertebrates and insects such as, worms, spiders, earwigs and grasshoppers, supplemented with berries and seeds.
