Fulica atra

Coot - Unmistakable with it's white forehead. Some folk relate it's call to a cork being taken from a bottle of wine! Breeds on lakes and large ponds, frequently on reservoirs, gravel-pits and ponds in urban parks and also slow-flowing rivers. Photographs from Allestree Derby, Attenborough Nature Reserve in Nottinghamshire, one from Portugal.
