Carduelis carduelis

Goldfinch - Probably the most colourful of our birds. The Goldfinch loves thistle seeds and is often seen on wasteland feeding on the seeds as in some of these photographs. A group or flock of Goldfinches are called a "charm" and charming they are too! The nest is placed in the fork of a small tree or bush. It is made from dead grass, rootlets, thistledown, wool and cobwebs. Photos taken at Haslams Lake Allestree Derby, Co Leitrim and Tavira in Portugal.
