Spilopelia senegalensis

Laughing Dove - A small long-tailed dove found in dry scrub and semi-desert habitats where pairs can often be seen feeding on the ground. They feed on fallen seeds, mainly of grasses, other vegetable matter and small ground insects such as termites and beetles. Its body is pastel shades of brown and pink with a spotted black collar. So called because of its repetitious “coo- coo coo ru” call which resembles laughter! I came across this dove for the first time in the Paphos region of Cyprus.
