Anus platyrhynchos

Mallard - Probably the most common British duck. This duck is an ancestor of the farmyard duck. The loud quacking we hear from these ducks on ponds and lakes are normally the female. The male is a much quieter individual. It habitats virtually any kind of freshwater from small ponds on farms and in town parks up to the largest reservoirs, and also swamps and marshes. In winter especially, also on estuaries and sometimes on sheltered seas. These shots were taken at Acre Lake Drumshanbo Co. Leitrim.
