Malurus melanocephalus

Red-backed Fairywren - females have brown upper parts as the one shown here. During the mating season, the male moults and the plumage becomes a glossy jet black with striking red flashes on the rump and back. It mainly feeds on insects, and supplements its diet with seed and small fruit. It is among the least faithful birds in the world, with extra-pair mating being commonplace! All the time I was in Bundaberg the male eluded me! Ah well better luck next time.
