Red-breasted Merganser - This is a diving duck. The diet is mainly small fish, aquatic insects and frogs. It is a resident bird that nests in Scotland and Ireland. Found in estuaries and Loughs. Often winters in coastal areas. Sometimes mistaken for Goosander although the latter is rarer in Ireland. Images from Co. Leitrim and Co. Sligo
