Vanellus spinosus

Spur-winged Lapwing - Unmistakable waders with the black crown and white neck and breast. It has small claw or spur hidden in both wings hence the name. The claws are sometimes used to fend off animals or birds of prey that get too close to the nest. It is found around wetlands, but also away from water in cultivated areas. I came across this one in a cultivated field in the Paphos area of Cyprus.
