Bubulcus ibis

Cattle Egret - A member of the Heron family. Cattle Egrets are found in the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate zones. The buff plumes you see here are adorned by the bird in the breeding season. They are attracted to cattle catching insects and small vertebrate prey disturbed by these animals. These photographs were taken in the Algarve at Praia Da Rocha and Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura Portugal.
