Podiceps cristatus

Great Crested Grebe - Breeds in most parts of Ireland and England. Lovely summer plumage on this bird which turns into a blackish grey in the winter. Dramatic courtship display on lakes and reservoirs in the spring. Feeds on fish and aquatic insects and their larvae, crustaceans and molluscs caught in 30 second dives. Moves to estuaries, sheltered bays and coastal inlets in winter. These pictures taken on a warm evening at Allestree Lake Derby England. One taken in Quinta Do Lago Portugal.
